Alant

/ˈæl.ənt/ noun

Definition

An aromatic plant also known as elecampane (Inula helenium), used historically in medicine, perfumery, and as a digestive aid.

Etymology

From Old French 'alant' and Latin 'ala,' possibly related to the plant's wing-like leaves or from Greek 'helenos' (from Helen of Troy in mythology, though this etymology is disputed).

Kelly Says

Alant root was so popular in medieval medicine that it was cultivated in monastery gardens—people believed it could cure coughs, and it actually does have some real medicinal properties that modern science has confirmed!
