Definition
A genus of kingfishers in scientific taxonomy; the type genus for the kingfisher family, named after the common kingfisher.
Etymology
From Latin 'alcedo,' derived from Greek 'alkuōn,' which may ultimately relate to Homeric mythology. The classical name captured the striking appearance and fishing behavior of these birds that fascinated ancient naturalists.
Kelly Says
The word 'halcyon' (as in 'halcyon days') comes from the same Greek root as 'alcedo'—ancient people were so captivated by kingfishers that they made up myths about them and even used their name poetically to describe peaceful times!
