Definition
Plural of allotment; portions of land or resources distributed to individuals, or small plots of land rented for growing vegetables.
Etymology
From Old French 'allot' + English '-ment' (act or result of). The verb 'allot' comes from 'a-' (to) + 'lot' (portion). Originally referring to the distribution of land or shares, the term has been used since medieval times, especially in England for garden plots.
Kelly Says
British allotments are like time machines—Victorian workers fought for them as a way to grow their own food, and today in cities like London, waiting lists for allotments can stretch to 30 years! They're tiny revolutions in growing your own.
