Definition
Parts or shares of a whole, especially referring to amounts of food served to individuals. Allocated parts of something larger.
Etymology
From Latin 'portio' meaning 'share or part', related to 'pars' (part). The word entered English via Old French 'porcion' in the 13th century, initially used for inheritance shares.
Kelly Says
Restaurant portion sizes have dramatically increased since the 1950s - what was once considered a normal portion is now often called a 'small'! The psychology of portions affects our eating habits more than we realize.
