Allure

/əˈlʊr/ noun

Definition

Allure is a strong, often mysterious attraction or charm that draws people in. It suggests something tempting that’s hard to resist.

Etymology

From Old French *aleurer* “to attract, coax,” originally “to train a falcon to come to the lure,” from *lure* “bait.” The word shifted from animal training to human temptation.

Kelly Says

Allure began with falconry: you’d swing a lure to pull a bird back to your glove. Modern allure works the same way—something glittering in the distance keeps calling you closer, even when you don’t fully know why.

Gender History

Historically, 'allure' has often been used in a gendered way, especially to describe women's physical or sexual attractiveness within male-dominated literary and advertising traditions. This contributed to framing women primarily as objects of desire rather than as full agents.

Inclusive Usage

Use 'allure' for people of any gender and for non-physical qualities (e.g., intellectual allure) to avoid reducing women in particular to appearance.

Inclusive Alternatives

["appeal","attractiveness","charm","interest"]

Empowerment Note

When describing allure in professional or intellectual contexts, explicitly recognize women’s expertise and achievements, not just their appearance.
