Alone

/əˈloʊn/ adjective, adverb

Definition

Without other people; by yourself. It can describe being physically by yourself or feeling like you have no one with you.

Etymology

From Middle English *al one*, literally “all one.” This came from Old English *eall ān*, combining *eall* (“all”) and *ān* (“one”). Over time, the two words fused into the single word “alone.”

Kelly Says

“Alone” literally means “all one,” which sounds much less sad and more peaceful. It reminds you that being alone can mean being whole and complete with yourself, not just lonely. The same root gives us “only” as well.
