Altruism

/ˈæltruːɪzəm/ noun

Definition

The selfless concern for the well-being of others, even when it costs you something. It describes kindness and generosity without expecting a reward.

Etymology

From French *altruisme*, coined in the 19th century by philosopher Auguste Comte, from Italian *altrui* (“other people”), based on Latin *alter* (“other”). It was created to name a moral principle focused on others rather than oneself.

Kelly Says

Altruism literally grows from the word for “other,” so it’s the practice of living for “the others.” Biologists even use it to describe animals that risk themselves for the group, like bees or meerkats. It blurs the line between kindness, survival strategy, and identity.
