Definition
An ethical philosophy stating that acting in one's own self-interest is the proper basis for morality; or excessive self-concern and self-interest.
Etymology
From ego plus the suffix -ism (indicating a philosophy or doctrine), from Latin ego meaning 'I.' The word was developed in the 18th century by philosophers discussing moral systems.
Kelly Says
Egoism is technically a real philosophical position (not just being a jerk), and philosophers like Ayn Rand built entire intellectual systems on it—which means 'I put myself first' became 'I put myself first *rationally*.'
