Definition
Showing a disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others.
Etymology
From French 'altruisme,' coined by philosopher Auguste Comte from Italian 'altrui' (others), from Latin 'alter' (other). Comte created this term in the 1850s as the opposite of egoism.
Kelly Says
Remember 'alter' (other) — altruistic people put others first! It's like being an 'other-ist' instead of an egoist. Comte literally invented this word to describe people who think about others before themselves.
