Definition
A small cavity, pit, or chamber; specifically, one of the tiny air sacs in the lungs where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged, or a tooth socket in the jaw bone.
Etymology
From Latin alveolus meaning 'small cavity,' 'hollow,' or 'bee cell,' possibly derived from alveus (channel or trough). The term was adopted into anatomy to describe these small compartments.
Kelly Says
Your lungs have about 300 million alveoli—if you flattened them out, they'd cover an area the size of a tennis court, which is why even gentle breathing can exchange enough gas to keep you alive.
