Definition
The collective term for all the male reproductive parts of a flower, consisting of all the stamens. It includes both the pollen-producing anthers and their supporting filaments.
Etymology
From Greek 'andros' (man) and 'oikos' (house), literally meaning 'man's house.' Created as a parallel term to gynoecium in 19th-century botanical nomenclature to systematically describe flower sexual organs.
Kelly Says
The androecium is the flower's 'gentlemen's club' - sometimes it's just a few members (like in orchids with 1-2 stamens), but grasses can have hundreds of stamens creating massive pollen clouds!
