Definition
The non-reproductive parts of a flower that surround the stamens and carpels, consisting of the calyx (sepals) and corolla (petals). It serves to protect reproductive organs and attract pollinators.
Etymology
From Greek 'peri' (around) and 'anthos' (flower), meaning 'around the flower.' Introduced in the 18th century when botanists needed a term for the outer flower parts that weren't directly involved in reproduction.
Kelly Says
The perianth is like a flower's outfit - sometimes it's a simple green uniform (sepals only), sometimes it's a flashy dress (colorful petals), and sometimes you can't tell the difference between the jacket and the shirt!
