Androspore

/ˈændrəspɔr/ noun

Definition

A spore produced by or associated with the male reproductive parts of an organism, particularly in algae and fungi.

Etymology

From Greek 'andros' (male) + 'sporos' (seed). This botanical and mycological term appeared in the 19th century as scientists classified different spore types.

Kelly Says

Some algae are so tiny and have such complicated reproduction that scientists had to invent terms like 'androspore' to keep track of which spores come from which sex—it's like keeping score in a microscopic game!
