Definition
An anecdote is a short, often interesting or funny story about a real person or event. It is usually used to illustrate a point or share a personal experience.
Etymology
From French 'anecdote', from Greek 'anékdota' meaning 'unpublished things', from 'an-' (not) + 'ekdidónai' (to publish). Originally, it referred to little-known or secret stories that hadn’t been written down.
Kelly Says
Because anecdotes are vivid and memorable, they can easily trick us into thinking 'this one story = the general truth'. That’s why scientists warn about 'anecdotal evidence'—great for storytelling, terrible for proving big claims.
