Definition
A drawing, picture, or diagram that explains or decorates a text. An example that helps make something clear or proves a point.
Etymology
From Latin 'illustrare' meaning 'to light up, illuminate.' Formed from 'in-' (upon) and 'lustrare' (to purify, illuminate). The meaning evolved from literal illumination to figurative enlightenment through visual or conceptual clarification.
Kelly Says
The word 'illustration' beautifully captures the metaphor of visual learning as illumination - we literally 'shed light' on concepts through pictures. Medieval manuscripts were called 'illuminated' because gold leaf and bright colors seemed to make the pages glow with inner light.
