Annapolis

/əˈnæpəlɪs/ proper noun

Definition

The capital city of Maryland, United States, known for housing the U.S. Naval Academy.

Etymology

Named after Princess Anne of Denmark (later Queen Anne of Great Britain) in 1694. Originally called Providence, then Anne Arundel Town, finally becoming Annapolis from 'Anne' + Greek 'polis' (city).

Kelly Says

Annapolis is one of the few state capitals that was also briefly the capital of the entire United States in 1783-1784, when the Continental Congress met there. The city's baroque street plan, designed in 1695, radiates from two circles in a pattern inspired by Versailles.
