Definition
A substance that neutralizes stomach acid to relieve heartburn or indigestion.
Etymology
From anti- (against) + acid. The prefix 'anti-' comes from Latin and Greek meaning 'opposed to,' combined with 'acid' from Latin 'acidus' meaning sour.
Kelly Says
Your stomach naturally produces powerful acid to digest food, but too much causes pain—antacids work by literally changing the chemistry, raising the pH level so acid becomes less acidic, which is why they work so quickly.
