Antikathode

/ˌæntiˈkæθoʊd/ noun

Definition

The target electrode in an X-ray tube where high-speed electrons strike to produce X-rays.

Etymology

From anti- (against) + cathode (the negatively charged electrode). In an X-ray tube, electrons from the cathode are accelerated against the antikathode, also called the anode.

Kelly Says

The invention of X-rays in 1895 accidentally happened when Wilhelm Röntgen didn't realize electrons hitting the antikathode could create invisible radiation—he discovered it only because it made a fluorescent screen glow in the dark.
