Antilift

/ˈæntɪlɪft/ adjective

Definition

Designed to prevent or reduce lift; in aeronautics, a feature that counteracts or minimizes the upward force on an aircraft or object.

Etymology

From anti- (against) plus lift. This technical term emerged in aeronautical engineering in the 20th century as designers needed vocabulary for features that oppose aerodynamic lift.

Kelly Says

Antilift devices like spoilers on race cars intentionally make vehicles harder to lift—counterintuitively creating more downforce for better grip, showing how the seemingly opposite of flying can make you go faster on the ground!
