Breton

/ˈbretən/ adjective/noun

Definition

Relating to Brittany, its people, or their Celtic language; a native of Brittany or the Celtic language spoken there.

Etymology

French, from Latin 'Brito' meaning Briton. The Bretons were Celtic peoples who migrated from Britain to Armorica (now Brittany) in the 5th-6th centuries, carrying their language and culture across the English Channel.

Kelly Says

Breton is one of the most endangered Celtic languages, more closely related to Cornish and Welsh than to French despite centuries of coexistence. The language survived Roman conquest, Viking raids, and French unification, but faces its greatest challenge today from modernization and urbanization.
