Antipharisaic

/ˌæn.tiˌfɛr.ɪˈseɪ.ɪk/ adjective

Definition

Opposed to or critical of Pharisaism; rejecting hypocrisy, rigid religious rules, or outward displays of virtue while lacking genuine inner goodness.

Etymology

From 'anti' (against) + 'Pharisaic' (relating to the Pharisees, a Jewish sect in ancient Palestine). The adjective criticizes the hypocrisy that Jesus famously condemned in the Pharisees.

Kelly Says

Jesus's strongest criticisms in the Bible were against the Pharisees, and the word 'pharisaic' (meaning hypocritical) became so associated with hypocrisy that 'antipharisaic' literally means 'against hypocrisy' in religious contexts!
