Software designed to detect and remove computer viruses and other malicious programs from computer systems.
Etymology
Compound of 'anti-' (against) + 'virus'. The computer sense borrowed from biological 'virus', as computer malware behaves similarly to biological viruses by replicating and spreading.

The first computer antivirus was created in 1987 by Andreas Lüning and Kai Figge, but ironically, some early antivirus programs were more disruptive to computers than the viruses they claimed to fight!
