Aparavidya

/ˌɑpərəˈvɪdyə/ noun

Definition

In Hindu and Buddhist philosophy, ignorance or false knowledge; the state of not knowing ultimate reality or truth.

Etymology

From Sanskrit avidya ('ignorance' or 'non-knowledge'), with para- prefix. In Vedantic philosophy, avidya represents the fundamental ignorance that obscures our perception of Brahman (ultimate reality).

Kelly Says

In Hindu philosophy, aparavidya is considered the root cause of all suffering—the idea that we're ignorant of our true nature is so foundational that overcoming it is the entire goal of spiritual practice!
