Definition
A type of volcanic or metamorphic rock that is light and porous, resembling pumice or foam stone.
Etymology
From Greek aphros (foam, froth) + -lite (stone). The naming refers to the rock's light, airy, frothy appearance that resembles sea foam.
Kelly Says
Ancient geologists looked at porous volcanic rock and the first thing they thought of was sea foam—because Aphrodite herself was born from sea foam in Greek mythology, so the connection felt natural to them.
