Aplanospore

/ˌæplænəˈspɔr/ noun

Definition

A type of spore that cannot move on its own, produced by certain algae and fungi.

Etymology

From Greek 'a-' (without) + 'planos' (wandering) + 'spore' (seed). The term was coined in the 19th century to distinguish non-motile spores from motile zoospores.

Kelly Says

Even though aplanospores can't swim, they're incredibly successful at spreading—some fungi produce billions of them in clouds that travel on air currents instead, which is actually way more efficient than individual movement!
