Appete

/æˈpiːt/ verb

Definition

An archaic verb meaning to seek after, desire, or hunger for something.

Etymology

From Old French 'appeter,' derived from Latin 'appetere' (to strive for, desire). The verb form corresponding to the noun 'appetite,' preserved in archaic English but now obsolete.

Kelly Says

Medieval English had the verb 'appete' (to desire) alongside the noun 'appetite'—both are Latin-based, but the verb died out and we lost that flexibility; now 'desire' or 'crave' does the job instead.
