Apse

/æps/ noun

Definition

A semicircular or polygonal recess in a church, typically located at the eastern end behind the altar. The apse often features a domed or vaulted ceiling and serves as the focal point for the most sacred elements of the church.

Etymology

From Latin 'apsis,' borrowed from Greek 'hapsis' meaning 'arch' or 'vault.' Originally used in Roman architecture for the curved end of a basilica, the form was adopted by early Christians for their places of worship.

Kelly Says

The apse is where architecture becomes pure theater - its curved walls naturally focus sound and sight toward the altar, while its dome often features Christ Pantocrator mosaics staring down like a divine spotlight, making every worshipper feel personally observed by the divine!
