Definition
A sanctuary is a safe place where people or animals are protected from danger or harm. It can also mean the most holy part of a religious building.
Etymology
From Old French *sanctuaire*, from Latin *sanctuarium*, meaning 'a holy place', from *sanctus* 'holy'. The idea of safety grew from the belief that holy places offered protection.
Kelly Says
Sanctuary began as 'holy place' and grew into 'safe place', as people trusted temples more than kings. Today we talk about wildlife sanctuaries or even 'sanctuary cities', stretching an ancient religious idea into modern politics. The word shows how sacredness and safety have long been intertwined.
