Arch

/ɑːrtʃ/ noun

Definition

An arch is a curved structure that spans an opening and supports weight from above, like over a doorway or bridge. It is strong because the curve spreads the weight down to the sides.

Etymology

From Old French “arche,” from Latin “arcus,” meaning “bow” or “arch.” The idea is that an arch curves like a bow that has been bent.

Kelly Says

Arches were a secret superpower of ancient builders: they let people build taller, wider, and stronger than with flat beams. Once people figured out arches, they could make huge bridges and cathedrals that didn’t fall down.
