Definition
A Russian cooperative association or work group, especially of craftspeople or laborers who share profits and management.
Etymology
From Russian артель (artel'), borrowed from Tatar or Turkic languages. The word entered European languages in the 19th century as Western observers documented Russian labor practices. The meaning evolved from a general term for a band or group to specifically denote cooperative work organizations.
Kelly Says
The artel represents a fascinating alternative to capitalism and individual enterprise—19th-century Russian workers organized these voluntary cooperatives centuries before modern startup culture rediscovered the appeal of collaborative ownership and shared success.
