Definition
In a way that is made by humans rather than occurring naturally, or in a way that seems fake or insincere.
Etymology
From Latin 'artificium' meaning craftsmanship, through Old French 'artificiel.' The root 'artifex' means craftsman ('ars' = art + 'facere' = to make), so 'artificial' literally means 'made by art/craft.'
Kelly Says
It's mind-bending that many things we call 'artificial' are now indistinguishable from nature—artificial sweeteners, synthetic diamonds, and lab-grown meat are chemically identical to natural versions, challenging what 'artificial' even means!
