From 'assuming' (adjective meaning arrogant) plus '-ness,' a suffix that creates abstract nouns denoting qualities or states. This follows the pattern of 'happiness,' 'kindness,' 'boldness,' etc. It names the characteristic itself rather than an instance of it.
