Astereognosis

/ˌæstɛrioʊɡˈnoʊsɪs/ noun

Definition

A neurological condition where a person cannot recognize or identify objects by touch alone, even though their sense of touch and motor control are otherwise normal.

Etymology

From Greek 'a-' meaning without, 'stereos' meaning solid or three-dimensional, plus 'gnosis' meaning knowledge. The condition literally describes loss of 'solid knowledge' or inability to recognize solid forms through touch.

Kelly Says

Patients with astereognosis can feel a pencil in their hand perfectly fine, but their brain can't connect that tactile sensation to the concept of 'pencil'—it's a fascinating glimpse into how our brains construct reality from sensory information.
