Atmospheres

/ˈæt.məsˌfɪrz/ noun

Definition

The layers of gas surrounding a planet, or the mood and feeling of a place or situation; plural of atmosphere.

Etymology

From Greek 'atmos' (vapor) + 'sphaira' (sphere). Coined in the 1600s as scientists developed the concept of gas layers around planets. The figurative meaning (mood/feeling) developed later as the word was used metaphorically.

Kelly Says

Every planet has an atmosphere, but Earth's is special because it's the ONLY one we know that can support life as we know it! The word atmosphere works perfectly for both the literal gas layers and the feeling of a room.
