Atomic

/əˈtɑmɪk/ adjective

Definition

Relating to atoms, the basic units of matter. Also referring to nuclear energy or weapons that derive power from atomic reactions.

Etymology

From Greek atomos meaning 'indivisible,' from a- 'not' and temnein 'to cut.' Originally described the theoretical smallest particle of matter, later applied to nuclear physics when atoms were found to be divisible.

Kelly Says

Ironically, 'atomic' comes from Greek meaning 'uncuttable,' yet atomic energy comes precisely from splitting atoms apart. The term 'Atomic Age' began in 1945, transforming a word from ancient philosophy into the defining concept of modern civilization and warfare.
