Definition
An opening or pore connecting the atrium to the outside of the body, especially in fish and other aquatic animals.
Etymology
From atrio- (Latin atrium) + pore (Latin porus 'opening'). A specialized term in ichthyology describing the external opening of the atrial cavity in fish.
Kelly Says
The atriopore is how fish let water flow through their gills efficiently—it's actually a brilliant engineering solution where water enters one way and exits another, creating a one-way current.
