Pore

/pɔːr/ verb

Definition

To study or examine something intently and carefully, often for a long time; or as a noun, a tiny opening in skin or a membrane.

Etymology

As a verb, possibly from Middle English 'pouren,' of uncertain origin. As a noun, from Latin 'porus,' from Greek 'poros' (passage). The two meanings are unrelated etymologically.

Kelly Says

The verb 'pore' and 'pour' sound identical but are completely different—people constantly mix them up, even though 'pore over' (study closely) and 'pour over' (pour liquid) are totally different actions!
