Atrophy

/ˈætrəfi/ noun/verb

Definition

The process of gradually declining in effectiveness or vigor due to underuse or neglect; to waste away.

Etymology

From Greek 'atrophia,' from 'a-' (without) plus 'trophe' (nourishment). Originally a medical term for muscle wasting due to lack of nutrition, extended to describe any gradual decline from disuse.

Kelly Says

Think 'a-trophy' — without your trophy (achievement/use), things waste away! Muscles atrophy without exercise, skills atrophy without practice, and even relationships can atrophy without attention. Use it or lose it!
