Definition
The status of being an Eastern Orthodox church that is self-governing and independent from other ecclesiastical authorities.
Etymology
From Greek auto- (self) + kephale (head) + -y (state or condition). An ecclesiastical term describing complete church autonomy and self-governance.
Kelly Says
It's wild that different Orthodox churches have different relationships with Rome and Constantinople—autocephaly is literally the politics of 'who gets to be the head'!
