Autocratic

/ˌɔtəˈkrætɪk/ adjective

Definition

Taking no account of other people's wishes or opinions; domineering and controlling. Describes leadership or behavior that demands absolute obedience.

Etymology

From Greek 'autokratoros' meaning 'ruling by oneself,' combining 'autos' (self) + 'kratos' (power, rule). Originally described political systems where one person held absolute power, then extended to any domineering behavior.

Kelly Says

Think 'AUTO-cratic' - like a car on AUTO-pilot that won't let you steer! An autocratic leader wants to be the only one driving, never letting others have control of the wheel.
