Definition
A rare or obsolete term for extreme independence of thought and behavior; the quality of being self-willed or self-governing to the point of stubbornness.
Etymology
From Greek autos (self) + nomos (law/rule) + -asy (condition/quality). An archaic medical or philosophical term from 17th-18th century texts that gradually fell out of use as 'autonomy' became preferred.
Kelly Says
While we use 'autonomy' all the time, 'autonomasy' carried a judgmental edge—it specifically meant being *unreasonably* self-governing, like a teenager who refuses all advice. Words can subtly shift how we judge the same behavior.
