Definition
An early automated telephone exchange or self-operating telephone device that could function without human operators.
Etymology
From Greek 'auto-' (self) and 'phone' (sound, voice). This term appeared in early 20th-century telecommunications to describe the pioneering automatic switching technology.
Kelly Says
Before smartphones and computers, the 'autophon' was cutting-edge technology—the first step toward the automated world we live in today, replacing operators who manually connected every single call!
