Definition
A hypothetical subatomic particle predicted by certain physics theories to help explain dark matter and symmetry in the universe.
Etymology
From 'axial' (relating to an axis) plus the particle suffix '-on.' Proposed in 1978 by physicists studying the strong nuclear force and its unexpected symmetry properties.
Kelly Says
Axions are one of physics' best guesses for dark matter—invisible stuff that makes up most of the universe—and physicists are building fancy detectors to try to catch them.
