Backfiring

/ˈbækˌfaɪrɪŋ/ verb

Definition

When a plan or action produces the opposite of its intended result, or when an engine misfires.

Etymology

From 'back' and 'fire.' Originally a mechanical term for engines, it became metaphorical by the early 20th century when people applied it to plans going wrong.

Kelly Says

A backfire in an engine literally shoots flames backward, which is exactly why the term works so perfectly for plans that explode in your face in reverse.
