Balkan

/ˈbɔlkən/ adjective

Definition

Relating to the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe, or characteristic of the countries and cultures of this region.

Etymology

From Turkish 'balkan' meaning 'mountain,' ultimately from Persian 'bālā-khāna' meaning 'high house' or 'upper chamber.' The term was applied to the mountainous peninsula due to its rugged terrain, particularly the Balkan Mountains.

Kelly Says

The word 'balkanization' entered political vocabulary to describe the fragmentation of regions into smaller, often hostile states - a process the Balkan Peninsula itself exemplified through centuries of complex ethnic and political divisions. Ironically, this geographic term for mountains became synonymous with political fragmentation worldwide.
