Definition
An island nation in the Caribbean Sea, known for its beaches, rum production, and as the birthplace of grapefruit. A former British colony that gained independence in 1966.
Etymology
From Portuguese 'Os Barbados' meaning 'the bearded ones', referring to the bearded fig trees (or their aerial roots) that Portuguese explorers found covering the island in the 1500s.
Kelly Says
Barbados literally means 'the bearded place' because Portuguese sailors were struck by the island's trees with their hanging aerial roots that looked like beards. The island is also the only place where grapefruit naturally occurred!
