Definition
A sensory nerve ending that detects changes in blood pressure and sends signals to the brain to help regulate cardiovascular function.
Etymology
From Greek baro- (weight/pressure) plus receptor (from Latin recipere, to receive). The term was coined in the 20th century as scientists identified these pressure-sensing nerve cells.
