A genus of tropical flowering plants and vines known for their distinctive orchid-like flowers, commonly called butterfly trees or mountain ebony.
Named after the Bauhin brothers (Jean and Gaspard), 16th-century Swiss botanists and herbalists. The genus was designated in their honor by Linnaeus.
The bauhinia flower is Hong Kong's national flower, and its distinctive two-lobed petals actually inspired the design of the Hong Kong flag and coat of arms!
