Definition
Plural of bedlam; places of chaos, confusion, or scenes of wild disorder.
Etymology
From Bedlam (Bethlehem Hospital) + the plural suffix -s. After bedlam became a common noun meaning 'chaos,' it could be pluralized to describe multiple chaotic situations or places.
Kelly Says
By the 18th century, 'bedlam' had become so divorced from the actual hospital that people could talk about multiple bedlams—any chaotic place could BE a bedlam!
