Beside

/bɪˈsaɪd/ preposition

Definition

Beside means next to or at the side of something or someone. It can also compare two things, as in saying something is unimportant beside something else.

Etymology

From Old English “bī sidan,” meaning “by the side.” Over time, the phrase fused into the single word “beside” in Middle English.

Kelly Says

English often turns short phrases into single words: “by side” became “beside.” Notice how a tiny change to “besides” adds the idea of “in addition to,” even though they look almost the same.
